Abstract:
Archaeology South East was commissioned by RSK to undertake an Archaeological Watching Brief at Elliot School, London Borough of Wandsworth, in advance of the development of the site. The rural character of the post-mediaeval land-use in the vicinity and its subsequent transformation to an affluent suburb in the early 20th century suggested a high potential for conservation of archaeological levels within a poorly explored context. The site lies in close proximity to an Archaeological Priority Area. The watching Brief was conducted in the course of seven days between 31/08/2012 and 20/09/2012. Areas across the site were observed: the northern limit of a Haul Road traversing the site, a segment of a drainage trench at the western limit; four machined text pits and two trenches opened for archaeological observations in the southern area. No archaeological assets were identified to the North. A NE-SW trench containing brick rubble was identified to the west of the site indicative of late post-mediaeval or modern construction activity of unknown, but probably limited extent, prior to the installation of the school in the 1950's. The southern part of the site was traversed by a post-mediaeval N-S brick drain, originally cylindrical in form, and a second linear NE-SW structure of a single brick width. The horizontal truncation of the drain confirms truncation of the land-surface by landscaping activity, presumably due to the installation of the school grounds.
