Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by Environmental Assessment Services Ltd to undertake an archaeological watching brief during ground-works at Rusper Nunnery Farm, Horsham Road, Rusper, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 4QT. No archaeology relating to the medieval Rusper Nunnery was identified. A small farm building, pit, drain and ditch of 18th or19th century origins were recorded. The building had been in use prior to construction work. The natural clay substrate deposit [05] to the east of the site and [20] to the south-east sloped down from an approximate altitude of 83.50m AOD at the south-west, to approximately 82.00m AOD at the north and east. A substantial modern landscaping deposit overlay the original land-surface across the southern and eastern parts of the site. Natural clay was exposed immediately below the modern buried soil across the eastern part of the site. To the west, the reduction revealed only hardcore rubble below the modern floors of the demolished farm buildings.
