Abstract: |
English Heritage carried out a field investigation of a bank barrow and its environs, on Long Barrow Hill, Long Bredy, Dorset. Long Barrow Hill, which forms part of a wider area of downland known as Martin's Down, lies 1km to the north of the village of Long Bredy, in the parish of the same name and the district of West Dorset. The bank barrow on which the investigation focused is centred at National Grid Reference SY 5716 9115. The analytical field survey was undertaken as part of the first phase work. The aim of this work is to 'better the understanding of the nature of the specific monument type', but with a desire to record surviving examples of bank barrows, themselves characterised by elongated mounds and side ditches, and presenting an obviously shared morphology with cursus enclosures. |
