Abstract:
A historic environment assessment was required by Forestry and Land Scotland to inform a proposed planting scheme at Pencloe Farm, near New Cumnock, East Ayrshire. A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken, designed to establish a sound baseline on the historic environment within the landholding and to make recommendations on its management. The findings of the assessment and survey are presented in this report. Fifteen historic environment sites and three blocks of rig and furrow were identified within the assessment area and are considered within this report. These are: five former sheepfolds, six gravel pits or quarries, two relict field systems with associated rig blocks and two possible structures. The third rig block (B) was not associated with either of the field systems. Based on the evidence gathered for this assessment, positive management has been recommended to safeguard six sites and one rig block.
