Abstract:
A three trench evaluation in the graveyard of St.Michaels Church, Dalston. The trenches have been excavated as part of the planning application associated with a new extension. A significant quantity of disarticulated human remains were recovered plus a single articulated burial of a female adult in Trench 3. Shroud pins were a common find. A rim sherd of late 12th century Red Gritty ware pottery was recovered as unstratified. No human bone was identified within the upper most 0.5m of excavations. Excavations below 0.5m from the current ground level would likely encounter disarticulated human remains. However, the results of the evaluation suggest that articulated human remains are not likely to be encountered at a depth above 0.9m.
