Abstract: |
This volume is a report on excavations undertaken on and adjacent to the Roman town and medieval city defences between 1971 and 1986. They produced evidence tracing their character and development from their foundations around AD 70 to the 19th century. Apart from any military function, the evidence suggests that the defences defined spaces and shaped use within the liminal zone of the city including periods of providing space for open access, habitation, refuse disposal and service functions. The defences remained a major feature of the local landscape until the 19th century, when Winchester’s built-up area pushed beyond the line of the walls. |
