Abstract: |
A geophysical survey was carried out by Archaeological Surveys ltd at IWM Duxford at the request of the Imperial War Museums. The site was used as an RAF airfield between 1917 and 1961 and contained structures and aircraft dispersal hardstanding from WW2 as well as Cold War hardstanding. The results show the location of the WW2 hardstanding constructed by the USAAF in the western part of the site. Cold War hardstanding also resulted in a highly magnetic response to ferrous material in the joints of the concrete pads with further areas of magnetic debris to the north, possibly indicating further former areas of hardstanding. In the northern part of the site, highly magnetic responses relate to former wartime structures. The survey also located a previously unrecorded ring ditch that appears to relate to a Bronze Age round barrow. |
