Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake an archaeological evaluation at St Clements Valley, Greenhithe, Kent. Fifteen archaeological trenches were excavated. Natural geology, comprising of head deposits, was found in every trench. Trenches 5 - 15, towards the east of the site, were quite shallow, many of them having natural directly overlain by topsoil. Only one feature was identified on this side of the site, in trench 13, which was a small undated pit. Trenches 1, 2, 3 and 4 were deeper, and showed signs of disturbance higher in their stratigraphy probably due to the allotment gardens that used to be on site. Three archaeological features were identified in trench 4, which had one burnt pit and two other, undated pits. A ditch was identified in trench 3, and another, much shallower ditch was seen in trench 2. Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age pottery was recovered, but is potentially residual. |
