Abstract:
English Heritage carried out a field investigation of a suspected bank barrow and its immediate environs on Long Low near Wetton in Staffordshire. The site lies 2km to the south-west of the village of Milldale in the parish of Ilam and the district of Staffordshire Moorlands, and the barrow on which the investigation focussed is centred at National Grid Reference SK 1213 5390. In addition, it lies within but close to the southern limit of the Peak District National Park. The aim of this is to 'better the understanding of the nature of the specific monument type', in particular cursus enclosures, but also bank barrows which present an obvious shared morphology. The project is aimed at providing a research and interpretation based overview of these allied and poorly understood monument classes and addresses a wide variety of related issues including monument condition, vulnerability, management and protection. As well as this, the project will support the work of the Monuments Protection Programme by providing data that will help to define and refine constraint areas for scheduling and future management.
