Abstract:
This report provides an initial assessment of The Wharf Cafe, Town Wharf, Newark at the request of Charles Wagner of the English Heritage East Midlands Team. An application to demolish the building was submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council on 2nd November 1995, and the application has subsequently been called in for determination by the Secretary of State for the Environment. English Heritage's Historical Research and Analysis Team have been asked to provide information as a basis for written representations to be submitted to the Secretary of State by English Heritage. The work has involved documentary research by Chris Miele and an archaeological assessment of the fabric by Richard Lea. Fieldwork on site was undertaken on Tuesday 1st October.
