Abstract:
In March 2014 Archaeology South-East carried out a historic building record on the malting at Little Canfield Hall, Little Canfield, Essex and archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the malting and the medieval tithe barn that was under conversion by the same developers. The work was carried out to satisfy archaeological conditions associated with residential conversion. The building forms part of an important medieval and post-medieval farmstead that includes several historic farm structures, some of which are Listed. The malting appears to have been built in the 18th century during a phase of farm improvement . Different parts of the building served different functions and these were identified in the survey: the barley and malt stores, two germinating floors and the kiln. Being part of a farm complex, it also included a cow house and loose boxes with access to a yard . The structure is brick-built and constructed in two phases. The oldest part is the kiln and it is possible this accompanied a smaller timber-framed malting was that was rebuilt in brick, probably not long after. After closure in the late 19th or early 20th century the conical kiln roof was removed along with the kiln itself and kiln floor. The roofs of the barley store and half of the germinating floors were refurbished at the same time. Many original features survive such as loading doors the distinctive louvered windows, shovelling hatches. The probable location of the steeping tank and couch frame were found. Some of the wire mesh floor survives. Monitoring works on the west side of the medieval tithe barn located a series of probable moat-construction or cleaning deposits used as a building platform for the medieval barn.
