Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by Faithful+Gould, on behalf of their client, Kent County Council, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the extension of Broomhill Bank School, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells. Two areas were subject to archaeological monitoring, although significant modern truncation was noted in both areas. The underlying natural Ardingly Sandstone was observed between 0.60m and 0.70m below ground level. In the northernmost area, the natural geology was overlain by a subsoil horizon that survived around the perimieter of the monitored area only; much of the area had been subject to severe truncation from excavations for a former swimming pool. In the southern area the absence of any such subsoil horizon suggests extensive horizontal truncation across the monitored area. In both areas, thick deposits of recent made ground were observed overlying natural geology or subsoil. A modern soakaway, infilled with fragments of furnace lining was noted in the southern area. No other archaeological finds or features were observed during the course of the monitoring. |
