Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by Waterman Group to carry out a watching brief on the preliminary geotechnical and services investigations at Marble Arch Tower, 55 Bryanston Street, London, W1H 7AJ. The site work was carried out between the 17th August and 13th October 2015. Ground level outside the site slopes from 26.60m OD at the junction of Edgware Road and Bryanston Street in the north-west, to 26.40m OD at the junction of Edgware road and Bayswater Road in the south-west. The Trial Holes were all located beyond the boundary of the existing building on the pavement. The only surviving archaeology consisted of two east-west orientated red brick arches, located at c.26.46m OD as well as a red brick floor and wall located at c. 25.82m OD, all of which are likely to be late post-medieval in date. Natural deposits were only observed to the south, within trial hole 13, and consisted of sand and gravel at c. 25.20m OD. |
