Abstract:
A watching brief conducted during the excavation of sewerage trenches through the moat of a medieval moated site and associated fishpond encountered fills of these features, with well-preserved organic material in the deeper waterlogged deposits. The settlement was dated to at least the 13th century, with the fishponds seen as later additions due to the recovery of later medieval pottery from the associated bank material. The negative earthworks were well preserved with the original moat protected by 18th-19th century partial infilling. There were indications that the lower foundations of buildings may have survived on the platform. [Au(abr)]
