Abstract:
John Moore Heritage Services carried out an archaeological field evaluation at land off Tadmarton Road in Bloxham, Oxfordshire (NGR SP 4222 3575 centred). The application site was subject to an archaeological rescue excavation in 1929-1935 during the quarrying of the area for ironstone. Twenty-seven Romano-British inhumation burials and a well were recorded. The aims of evaluation were to establish the presence/absence, extent and character of any archaeological features on the site, specifically to identify any remnant pockets of Roman activity, and to consider the archaeological interest of these in the wider context. The fieldwork comprised a scheme for the mechanical and limited hand excavation of 14 trial trenches across the site in total length of 430 m. No Roman-British burials were encountered during the evaluation. A single residual late Roman pottery sherd was recovered from the topsoil in the area of Trench 1. At the northern edge of the site three features were investigated; a small pit dated to the late Iron Age, a posthole and a ditch. These features represent activity which may have predated the burial ground, and may possibly be related with the well investigated in 1930s. Further activities within the site were represented by post-medieval furrows investigated at southern edge of the site and 19th century land drains encountered within Trenches 1, 7, 10 and 11. While the south part of the site has continually been used as arable land up to the present day, the north part was used as a quarry during the early 20th century, and subsequently after the closing down the quarry, as a pasture. However, the evidence obtained from Trench 3 located at southern edge of the disused quarry suggests that this area was used as dump in the mid 20th century.
