Abstract:
John Moore Heritage Services carried out an excavation on land to the south of Witney Road, Long Hanborough (NGR SP 412 140). The excavation area was approximately 6100m2 and targeted a concentration of Iron Age features recorded during evaluation in January 2017. The excavation was successful in establishing the nature of the remains seen during the initial evaluation. The eastern edge of a small rectilinear enclosure was recorded; this enclosure was delineated from the surrounding area by four segmented ditches that varied in length from 3 to 9m. Located within the enclosure was a shallow S-shaped gully that appeared to be the foundation for a structural feature such as a fence or wall. Pottery from these features suggested a date of later Iron Age to early Roman. Throughout the north western half of the site a series of pit clusters were recorded; these were typically found in groups of two or three. A large number contained charcoal rich fills, with several also showing evidence for burning in-situ. Several pits also contained cremated human remains, although in small proportions. Analysis of pottery from these features also indicates a LIA-Roman date. The LIA-Roman features were truncated by 6 Medieval/Post-Medieval furrows; additional Medieval agricultural activity was seen further to the south east where two linear ditches and three pits were recorded that contained Medieval pottery. A high degree of truncation from modern ploughing was evident throughout the site, with some features surviving to a depth of 0.1m or less.
