Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by The Environment Agency to undertake an archaeological watching brief as well a series of targeted investigations during the Sandwich Town Tidal Defence Scheme in and around the town of Sandwich, Kent. The scheme was designed to protect homes and businesses in the town and consisted of the construction of 14 Km of floodwalls and embankments along the River Stour from Richborough north-west of Sandwich to Broad Salts in the north-east. Here, a system of ditches and ponds were constructed for flood relief. The work took place between March 2013 and December 2015. Alongside the general archaeological monitoring of works on the scheme trial trenches were dug in Gallows Field (Reach 3) and into the earthwork known as Monks Wall (Reach 12). Monks Wall was also subject to topographic and walkover surveys prior to the alteration of the monument. Historic building recording of features in Reaches 4, 5 and 7 also took place. |
