Abstract: |
The evaluation comprised three trenches and revealed natural Hackney Gravels between 35.29m and 37.49m aOD; the gravels were overlain by subsoil and buried topsoil deposits demonstrating the general good deposit survival seen on site. Modern made ground and concrete floor slabs overlay the buried soils. A probable palaeochannel lay in the north of the site; this feature is likely to be of natural origin and it was likely to have infilled naturally. The feature could not be securely date by the primary fill did contain a single flint blade of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date. The fills appeared to be alluvial and fluvial in nature and indicate that the site lay within a varying yet damp environment, not particularly conducive to human occupation. The site lies relatively close to the River Wandle and previous excavation to the east have characterized the area as a marshy environment during much of prehistory. |
