Abstract: |
Oakland Golf and Leisure Ltd has obtained planning permission to extend the existing Mount Pleasant Golf Course, Lower Stondon. The planning application was supported by a heritage statement incorporating the results of a geophysical survey and desk-based research. These studies confirmed that the proposed development area contained archaeological heritage assets worthy of consideration in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework. Consequently, on the advice of Central Bedfordshire Council Archaeologist conditions were attached to the planning permission. Trial trenching took place during a period which included some very wet days. The strategy comprised the excavation of eighteen trenches measuring 2.2m wide and 50m long. Some of the trenches focused on the potential archaeological anomalies identified by the geophysical survey. Less intensive trenching was carried out in the areas which evinced no significant anomalies. The evaluation generally confirmed the results of the geophysical survey. The main focus of archaeological interest is a concentration of Iron Age (and possibly Bronze Age) archaeological features. A sub-circular enclosure with a potential entrance to the SW and dated to the early-middle Iron Age was revealed. A smaller ditch to the south-west of the enclosure contained no dating evidence and appeared to partially cut the subsoil, possibly suggesting a later date. The enclosure and potentially associated remains are significant as part of the wider early-middle Iron Age settlement activity identified to the north. An isolated water pit to the south-east of the enclosure produced a small amount of late Bronze Age / early Iron Age pottery. Although this may hint at earlier activity it is likely to be broadly contemporary with the other occupational evidence on site. Within the remainder of trial trenching identified features associated with medieval and post medieval cultivation of the area. |
