Abstract: |
Planning permission was granted by Central Bedfordshire Council for a two-storey and single-storey side extension at 'The Elms', 33 Sandy Road, Everton. Monitoring of groundworks took place during a period of dry weather. Despite the relatively small size of the investigation area, the monitoring elucidated significant aspects of the history and development of the site, particularly during the medieval period. A series of ditches defined partitions of the land. Later pits produced over 1.4kg of pottery, including locally manufactured material, which indicated domestic activity in the vicinity. An undated structural cut adjacent to the wall of the standing building may relate to one of the earlier buildings on the site, shown on historical maps. The client / landowner has indicated a desire to retain some of the pottery from the investigation; any retained sherds will be documented in accordance with the requirements issued by the Keeper of Archaeology at Bedford Museum. |
