Abstract: |
In advance of structural improvements to the roof of Nether Hall, ceilings were removed to expose the roof timbers. These were recorded and analysed. It was found that most of the timbers were of oak and that many showed signs of reuse. The roof, which was later than the hall's masonry walls, may have been constructed originally in the 17th century as a double-pitched roof. In the 18th century the central part was converted to a flat roof. In the 19th century a series of dormer windows was introduced. Other alterations were made into the 20th century. |
