Abstract:
On the 1st February 2018 York Archaeological Trust (YAT) conducted a borehole survey at Minster Car Hire, 111 Micklegate, York YO1 6LB (SE 5979 5150). The work was undertaken for TW Fields to help inform a possible future planning application. The work was based on a Written Scheme of Investigation produced by YAT. The works involved the drilling and recording of five boreholes inside the Minster Car Hire garage. Natural sands were detected at a depth of approximately 3.5m below ground level (BGL). Above natural a sequence of deposits, features and structures likely dating to the Roman period onwards were encountered. Early in the sequence deposits and features encountered include possible occupation, dumping and/ or levelling deposits which may date to the Roman period. Next, garden or horticultural soils appear likely to have accumulated during the medieval and in to the post-medieval periods. Towards the top of the sequence substantial brick built structures, including a well, appear to date to the post-medieval period, these were found in close proximity to deposits that likely relate to their subsequent demolition and clearance before the construction of the existing garage building in the early 20th century.
