Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology (CAA), Institute of Archaeology (IoA), University College London (UCL) was commissioned by Carter Lauren Construction Ltd. to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land at Hadley Park East, Telford, Shropshire, prior to the construction of a restaurant, hotel and associated infrastructure. Five evaluation trenches were excavated across the 0.687ha site. Natural geology was encountered at between 65.91m AOD in the deepest trench (1) to 67.96m in the shallowest trench (3). A layer of made ground was observed in four trenches and its thickness ranged from 0.13m in the southern part of the site (northeast end of trench 5) to 0.94m in the central and northern part of the site (trench 1). Several shallow ditches and four irregular pits/three throws revealed scattered across the site produced very low finds assemblage that all came from trench 1 and comprised one small sherd of post-medieval pottery and a fragment of CBM. Overall, the results of the evaluation suggest that the site that was truncated by the landscaping work in the last century, has always been located away from the centres of human activity, serving as an agricultural land, and, subsequently, the proposed development will have very small or no impact upon the archaeological report.
