Abstract: |
Two evaluation trenches were excavated on the site of a waste transfer site occupied by Braintree District Council and Essex County Council prior to extensive refurbishment works. The site lies within an the area of undated cropmarks in the surrounding fields. Both trenches were dug through thick layers of modern gravel surfacing and rubbley made ground onto natural clay deposits, the upper part of which were discoloured through ground contamination, likely to be dumped engine oil or similar. A third trench could not be excavated due to access restrictions and existing underground power cables. No archaeological features or deposits were found or finds collected. |
