Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was commissioned by The Charleston Trust, in advance of groundworks associated with the new access road and car park as well as groundworks associated with alterations made to the historic farm buildings and surrounding area. Residual flintwork was recovered showing a low level exploitation of the landscape during the early prehistoric period. The earliest occupation on site dates to the Early Iron Age. Unfortunately, only two features of this date were encountered which consisted of a large pit and a small pit or ditch terminus. Occupation continued into the Late Iron Age- Roman period in which a series of ditches, arranged perpendicular to each other, appear to form a field boundary as well as two parallel ditches which form a trackway around. A small number of pits were also of this date however their relationship to the surrounding activity is unclear. Hay barn and Threshing barn complex to the south of Charleston Farmhouse underwent multiple phases of construction over the centuries which became clearer during the groundworks The earliest evidence on site was from a series of chalk footings thought to be for the earlier timber frame (17th Century) along with a mortar, brick impressed surface. The Threshing Barn was then built Early-mid 18th century which may also relate to the brick surfaces found within the barn and yard. These surfaces could indicate a change in function of the farmstead from earlier crop processing and storage to animal husbandry
