Abstract:
A programme of archaeological and geo-archaeological evaluation was carried out at the former Southlands School, Dymchurch Road, New Romney, Kent. The work was undertaken on 22nd December 2009 on behalf of Carillion Plc. Four test pits (TP1-4) sampled the surface archaeology and investigated the geological sequence. Only TP1, positioned between the former line of the New Romney Main Sewer and the present Dymchurch Road, revealed significant archaeology: a possibly mid 15th-century dump deposit overlay a deposit of alluvium which in turn overlay a possible hard (for the beaching of boats). The hard perhaps related to a working beach that was inundated in the great storm of 1287. The sedentary sequence contains an exceptional micofossil potential with huge potential for reconstructing changes in sedimentary regimes at the locale and evidence for the timing of significant storm surge events. A combination of close interval sampling and dating may be able to deliver a fine grained account of storm surge events, possibly including the 1287 event.
