Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation, excavation and monitoring was carried out on restricted impact locations at Colchester Garrison Alienated Land Area B1b. The development site is located within the scheduled monument zones of the Roman circus and St John's Abbey. Investigations over the Roman circus revealed 24m of robber trenches over the inner and outer cavea walls, part of the central barrier including a lined water tank and associated ditch, and parts of the arena surface. A small number of Roman pits were also excavated along with a late 3rd-century inhumation burial which had truncated an earlier urned cremation burial. Approximately 16.5m of surviving in situ foundation from the precinct wall of St John's Abbey was revealed. Evidence for internal structural remains within this southwest corner of the abbey precinct was scarce and included a possible temporary structure/workshop, a clay oven and a two small sections of wall foundation. Four limes kilns were found during groundworks, taking the total number known from St John's Abbey precinct to six. A possible trackway runs through the precinct and numerous ditches appear to define plots for small-scale agricultural activities and animal husbandry for the abbey. Other structural remains included a post-medieval building/structure on the far northern edge of the development site, a post-medieval cobbled boundary wall built around later orchards, and modern foundations from demolished garrison buildings.
