Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology were commissioned by Padgett White Architects Ltd on behalf of the client to undertake an archaeological evaluation of land to the east of Windermere Gardens, Crook, County Durham, centred at National Grid Reference NZ 1677 3549. This work was undertaken in association with a pre-application (PRE28/19/01345) for a residential development comprising 122 dwellings. The overall proposed development comprised c. 3.36 hectares of a single pasture field located on the south-eastern fringe of the market town of Crook. Three phases of activity were encountered: Phase 1: superficial geology; Phase 2: late 19th/early 20th-century midden deposits and waste pits and Phase 3: topsoil. The geophysical anomalies identified in the early phase of works were all related to either variations in the superficial geology or post-medieval/early modern waste deposits and pits. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed during the evaluation. |
