Abstract: |
Between 13 June and 20 August 2018 Archaeology Cambridgeshire East (ACE) carried out a test pit excavation at 38 Brook Street, Soham, Cambridgeshire. Originally 2m x 2m, the area excavated reduced as depth increased being 0.5m x 0.5m at 190cm when the clunch stone floor was reached. Historical research had suggested a mid to late medieval occupation in the area and this was confirmed by the quantity and range of medieval pottery types recovered. A single sherd of Iron Age pottery was found and several worked flints, one fine translucent and leaf shaped, suggesting Bronze Age, or earlier, occupation. A relatively large sherd of a Roman quern stone may also indicate a past Roman presence. The test pit was heavily disturbed in the upper layers, being the site of modern fire pit which produced a substantial amount of domestic debris. The 1892 OS map shows an orchard bordering the location and it is possible that disturbance due to planting or removing trees may account for the variation in firmness of soil noted by those excavating. |
