Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd for research purposes between 23rd July 2018 and 5th August 2018 at Lochmaben Castle, Dumfries and Galloway, a Property in Case (PIC203) in the guardianship of Historic Environment Scotland. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken and informed by and built upon the results of a 2016 geophysical survey (carried out by Rose Geophysics), to shed valuable new light on the castle's development and the nature of its occupation, as well as providing an opportunity for local community engagement. In conclusion, no definite interpretations can be made due to the size of trenches and the time constraints. There was evidence across the site for the possible landscaping which occurred for Queen Victoria's Jubilee and this may have negatively affected any medieval archaeology which had remained. The only potentially significant features were a possible medieval ditch within Trench 4 and a stone culvert in Trench 3.
