Abstract:
A field evaluation was carried out at Greenwich Industrial Estate in advance of a new development, following the demolition of the industrial units. Nine trenches were excavated across the site, and archaeological features were recorded in all six trenches in the northern area. The features were largely late post-medieval in date, and comprised ditches, gullies, post-holes, and numerous pits. Although some of these features contained pottery which may be mid 16th or 17th century in date, given the date ranges for the wares concerned, it is likely that these features date from the 18th or 19th centuries. Earlier features consisted of an Iron Age ditch (containing one fresh pot sherd) and a possible medieval gully (containing tile fragments). Despite previous activity on the site, from at least the late 19th century, much of the area was relatively undisturbed, and the archaeological deposits had been sealed beneath thick layers of made ground and the late 20th century concrete slab.
