Abstract:
Open area excavation of 55ha of land on the north-western edge of Cambridge. The excavations revealed two middle to late Bronze Age activity foci in the form of ditches and pits, including a cremation cemetery containing six graves. during the early-middle Iron Age two settlements existed, one in the north and one in the southern part of the excavation area. The settlements were linked by a major trackway. The southern settlement consisted of major boundary ditches, defining the western end of a settlement that largely lay outside the excavated area to the east. It also included pits and post-built structures. The northern settlement consisted of a ladder enclosure along a trackway and a possible temple complex to its north. The southern settlement continued into the Roman period while the northern settlement experienced a hiatus in occupation but was re-occupied in the 2nd century AD. Three inhumation cemeteries and one cremation cemetery were part of the southern settlement. both settlements remained in use until the 4th century. There was no Saxon occupation. Medieval features comprised two systems of ridge and furrow agriculture.
