Abstract: |
A detailed magnetic gradiometer survey was undertaken on land at Knights End Road, March, Cambridgeshire. The survey area totalled 13.2ha. A previous evaluation has demonstrated that the site contains several Bronze Age pits, a Saxon hearth, a likely medieval moated manor house and possible post-medieval garden features. The extent of the medieval features are known from cropmarks and are thought to lie within a single field. Several of the fields surrounding this one have already been the subject of a geophysical survey, which only revealed agricultural features. This survey focused on the remaining fields surrounding the one containing the medieval moat feature. The survey captured several linear anomalies which most likely represent post-medieval and modern agricultural features, including former field boundaries, land drains and plough marks. The remaining anomalies are likely to be caused by background geology and modern detritus, although an archaeological origin for some features cannot be ruled out. |
