Abstract:
The 2015 excavations were undertaken in three areas defined by previous evaluations: a 50x50m area targeted a round barrow at Site III (TL 39670 74050) while extensive open area excavations undertaken to the south/southwest of the Site III barrow encompassed Sites IX and XII (TL 39310 73600 and TL 39650 73900). Alongside the latter, the results of archaeological monitoring of the quarry diversion ditch works undertaken in 2013 are also included. Excavations revealed that the earliest phase of the Site III Barrow - a sub-circular mound surrounded by a ring dicth - dated to the Early-Middle Neolithic and was initiated by a single crouched inhumation at its centre. Two further phases of ring ditch/mound including a secondary 'hengiform' ring ditch were recorded alongside two 'secondary' cremations. Excavations at Sites IX and XII exposed features ranging in date from the Late Neolithic through to the Middle Bronze Age. Although occurring at a low density, the features provide a major insight into the prehistoric land-use of the area. Late Neolithic features included pit clusters and a Durrington Walls-type house whilst Beaker/Early Bronze Age features consisted of further pit clusters and a pit-well/watering hole. Finally, a Middle Bronze Age field system was recorded across much of the area.
