Abstract:
The Heritage Network was commissioned by Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Ltd. on behalf of Tarmac Trading Ltd to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring at Sandy Heath quarry. The archaeological monitoring has been undertaken at the request of the minerals planning authority (MPA) because the proposed quarry extension had been assessed as lying within an area of archaeological importance by the Archaeological Conservation Officer of Central Bedfordshire. Tarmac Trading Ltd has permission to extract sand from an extension to the Company's existing quarry at Sandy Heath which lies about 2.5km east of the town of Sandy in Bedfordshire. The permitted area is centred on National Grid reference TL 200 495 and extends to 39.2 ha. The an earlier field evaluation concluded that there were no significant archaeological remains surviving in the area of the proposed extension. Subsequently, at a meeting between Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Ltd, for Lafarge Aggregates Ltd, and Mr Martin Oake of Bedfordshire County Council and archaeological adviser to the MPA, it was agreed that the findings of the field evaluation did not justify a detailed programme of further archaeological recording, but that an intermittent watching brief of the soil stripping operations should take place, with a contingency for the salvage excavation of any significant archaeological remains, should they be encountered. The present project involved the monitoring of a topsoil strip in two separate fields, in preparation to be quarried. Natural banding of stone and shale were observed which is consistent with the findings from the previous trial trench evaluation. No archaeological features were revealed during this work.
