Abstract: |
Oxford Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation of the site of a proposed housing development at Shinfield West, Berkshire. A total of 149 trenches was excavated across the site, representing an approximate 2% sample of the area. Each trench measured 30m x 2m. Four areas of archaeological remains were identified, but very little dating evidence was recovered. The largest area corresponded with a group of cropmark features and comprised a barrow, possibly dating from the late Neolithic period, and a (probably) later prehistoric field system. Two other areas comprised undated field systems, one of which may have included a domestic component. The smallest area comprised a hearth and a tree-throw hole, both of which were undated but contained worked flint (one piece in the three-throw hole and three in the hearth). |
