Abstract:
This report outlines the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation undertaken by Witham Archaeology at The Crown Inn, Crown Lane, Tinwell, Rutland in advance of planning permission relating to a residential development. The proposed development site lies between Main Street to the north and Crown Lane to the south, in the southern part of Tinwell village, immediately to the west of the Grade II Listed Post Office and Grade II* Listed Wall and Water Point. The site lies approximately 70m to the west of the Grade II* Listed medieval parish church of All Saints and c.100m to the north-west of the grade II manor. During an archaeological map, strip and sample investigation to the east of the site, a late medieval culvert or drain was found, together with a post-medieval surface probably representing a track or hollow way. The Leicestershire and Rutland Historic Environment Record places the site within the historic settlement core of Tinwell. The trial trenching at the Crown Inn revealed a possible medieval pit and ditch, two field boundaries possibly from the post-medieval period, a limestone structure, a modern small refuse pit, and a large modern truncation possibly associated with the construction of a cellar in the eastern part of the site. Evidence of modern landscaping was also identified, especially in the southern part of the site where it was associated with the garden and car park of the former public house.
