Abstract: |
The work at 12-16 De Montfort Street, Leicester was undertaken during the construction of a three storey rear extension. A modern overburden containing bricks and drain fragments covered the area and was partly removed. The eastern nine metres of the development area was disturbed with modern brick features truncating the archaeological horizon. The western extent exposed part of a ditch which was dug into the natural clay substratum. The upper fill contained medieval pottery dated 12th to 14th century and a modern drain fragment. The lower fill contained fired clay and bone fragments. It is not clear whether the feature is a modern ditch with residual medieval pottery or a medieval ditch with material from the modern overburden pressed into the top of it. |
