Abstract:
Desk-based assessment was undertaken in March 2011. The proposal site is in the form of an irregular triangle, bounded by residential development in the north and west and the A47 Earl Shilton bypass in the south. The site lies within a landscape of known archaeological significance. The geology of the area consists of drift alluvial and sand material overlying Mercia mudstone. The site does contain archaeology in the form of standing post-medieval earthworks (a pond); it also has the potential for further archaeology, which is highly likely. These would include two linears of a probable Roman and Early Medieval date. Burials of a Bronze Age date are also known as lying adjacent to the area. The extent of the flint and pottery scatters discovered across the line of the Earl Shilton by-pass may continue onto the site, such debris is often indicative of more permanent settlement in the area. A geophysical survey of the area would confirm, but not necessarily disprove that the two linears identified in the corridor of the Earl Shilton by-pass continue onto the site. It is also possible that it could pick up evidence of Bronze Age burials, for example, ring-ditches or burial pits. Depending on the results of this survey and the interpretation of it will enable a further scheme for mitigation of the archaeology.
