Abstract: |
A Geoarchaeological Post-Excavation Assessment of one evaluation trench and nine terrier rig boreholes. A Geoarchaeological Post-Excavation Assessment of one evaluation trench and nine terrier rig boreholes. Environmental and landscape reconstruction shows the site to lie on the terrace edge with an infilled prehistoric Thames tributary (palaeochannel) to the west. Assessment focused on one of the boreholes (BH3) that contained a typical Holocene alluvial sequence (gravels, clay sand, peat, silt clay). Environmental change from the Bronze Age (1130-917 cal BC, UBA-21667, 2859±36) to post medieval has been assessed. The evaluation trench was situated on the wetland/dryland interface where the peat rapidly thinned to the south. No archaeological finds or features were uncovered, but there was indirect evidence of prehistoric woodland clearance and agriculture in the plant macrofossil and pollen assemblages. |
