Abstract:
The ground was broken out and cleared by contractors under MOLA supervision. Trenches were excavated by machine by the contractors using a mechanical excavator monitored by a MOLA supervisor. The trench was cleaned by MOLA staff and a slot was excavated across exposed feature with hand tools. The locations of the evaluation pits were recorded by MOLA by offsetting from adjacent standing basement walls. The measurements were drawn onto a site survey supplied by the developer (Maltby Land Surveys 2014, Topographical Survey Merchant’s Hall, Essex Road N1 8LN, Job no. 14/326 Drawing no 14/326/100 scale 1:200 @A1). This information was then plotted onto the Ordnance Survey grid by MOLA geomatics. Levels refer to the OS Ordnance Datum and were calculated from the topographical survey plan provided by the contractor. A single evaluation trench was excavated exposing truncated natural brickearth at the base of the sequence. This was overlain by a post-medieval levelling deposit which was cut by an east-west aligned red-brick drain and a barrel-lined well containing two sherds of pottery dated 1760-1830. These features were sealed by a layer of 19th-century garden soil beneath modern rubble backfill and concrete.
