Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at New Gardens, Great Tew, Oxfordshire (NGR SP 39760 28492) between the 15th and 17th January 2020. It was commissioned by RPS Group on behalf of Great Tew and Bantham Estates LLP, in advance of the restoration of a walled garden which has been disused for some years. Planning permission for the development has been granted subject to a programme of archaeological works. Nine trenches were excavated across the 5ha site. The trenches revealed two limestone walls, a large cut garden feature, a garden path depicted on early Ordnance Survey maps and two bedding trenches for plants. It is thought that these features date to the latter half of the 19th Century. |
