Abstract:
Detailed magnetometry was carried out over 19ha within six fields ahead of potential residential development. The results substantiated cropmark evidence for a rectilinear enclosure within the north western part of the site. Other positive linear, curvilinear and discrete anomalies close to the enclosure may appear to relate to ditch-like and pit-like features; however, the archaeological potential of these could not be determined. The survey areas within the southern and eastern parts of the site, contained many positive linear, curvilinear, diffuse and discrete anomalies, and although some may relate to natural features, others may indicate cut features of anthropogenic origin. Due to the low magnetic enhancement and general lack of coherent morphology, the majority of these features are classified as uncertain in origin. As noted from other surveys within the region, the soils and underlying geology do not produce optimum conditions for magnetometry, although archaeological features do tend to produce anomalies of sufficient contrast for abstraction from the data.
