Abstract:
Desk based assessment of a proposed car park development at Warwick Technology Park, confirms that there are no scheduled Ancient Monuments or Listed Buildings on the site, and no other designated cultural heritage features or known archaeological remains. The evidence suggests that in the medieval to post-medieval periods the site was situated in an area of agricultural fields which have remained under cultivation into the late 20th century. It is possible that currently unknown archaeological remains could be present on site, although it is not considered likely that any remains would be of sufficient importance to act as a significant constraint on the proposed development. The exposed archaeological features are associated with the medieval and postmedieval village of Newbold, the history of which is not well documented. The medievalfeatures and finds represent the only remains of this date excavated so far within the village, although other such remains are likely to exist nearby. There are considerable similarities to Burton Dassett in the form of the buildings and in the pottery assemblage to ceramics recovered from Stratford and other nearby small medieval settlements. This indicates that medieval Newbold interacted with its surrounding communities in addition to the probably largely agricultural activities contained within the settlement and suggested by the remains of the building next to Grange Cottage.
