Abstract:
This report presents the findings of a desk-based assessment of the proposed demolition and rebuilding of an outbuilding, currently used as a domestic garage, at No. 4 The Green, Chesterton, Warwickshire. Map evidence shows that the existing building dates from between 1849 and 1887. Its original function is unknown. It was not the village forge (which was on the opposite side of the road), and there is good evidence that it was a basket-making shop at one period. It shows evidence of different construction and/or repair phases, and at least one internal wall has been removed, probably during the conversion to garage use after 1978. The site is in an area of high archaeological potential, but the area directly affected by the development is very small and most of it has already suffered truncation from the terracing of the existing building into the natural slope. The development is therefore unlikely to have a major impact on the significance of any archaeological remains which may be present within the area. Archaeology Warwickshire consider that mitigation would not be appropriate in this instance. The replacement building would be on the same footprint as the existing structure, apart from a very small increase for the new rear extension. The main element of it is the same mass as, and almost identical in appearance to, the existing structure. There will be no adverse impact on the significance of the setting of either the Scheduled Monument on the opposite side of the street, or the 17th-century Listed cottages at Nos 6 and 7, The Green and the Listed pump in front of the former.
