Abstract:
Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the nature of the archaeological landscape across a ~4ha corridor of land between Embleton and Dalton Piercy, near Hartlepool, Tees Valley-using geophysical survey. The corridor's entire length was successfully surveyed using the magnetic method. An anomaly of probable archaeological origin has been detected and takes the form of a circular ditch-like feature, possibly pre-historic in origin. The magnetic survey has also detected many anomalies of undetermined origin, which are likely caused by agricultural or geological processes. The survey examined a 20m corridor comprising around 4ha in size along the route of the proposed main. Positive and undetermined anomalies were recorded along the route. Some anomalies are recorded as undetermined due to the constraints of the survey area. Positive anomalies probably relating to the prehistoric period, potentially representing a barrow or a roundhouse with internal pit features was found in Area 6. Historic ridge and furrow and modern cultivation evidence was found throughout the survey area.
