Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was carried out at Blossom Street, Manchester, between 29 August 2017 and 13 October 2017. The site was bisected by Gun Street, with Block A fronting Great Ancoats Street and Block B fronting Henry Street. Work on Block A revealed late 18th century buildings, both commercial and residential, a rear yard, and a number of outbuildings, with later 19th century alterations. The majority of the buildings on Block A remained standing into the late 20th century. Investigations on Block B revealed the remains of 19th century cellared houses, including terraced back-to-backs. Numerous outbuilding, which underwent many changes in the 19th century, were accessed by a ginnel from Henry Street; the yard area and entrance to the back-to-back houses was also reached in this manner. The buildings on Block B were demolished by 1908. |
