Abstract:
Cotswold Archaeology undertook three phases of archaeological excavation between 2016 and 2018, on land at Stoke Gifford, South Gloucestershire, prior to development of the site. The excavations revealed a complex sequence of activity dating from the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period to the Late Roman period, which culminated in the construction of a courtyard villa during the mid-to-late Roman period. The earliest features included an enclosed rural settlement and roundhouse, of Late Iron Age or Early Roman date. A field system and a group of enclosures may have been associated and continued to develop in the early-to-mid Roman period. Also during the mid-to-late Roman period a rectangular building was constructed, replacing the earlier enclosure and roundhouse. This building was eventually replaced by new buildings constructed on a new alignment, forming a villa complex with ancillary buildings. The villa developed from a simple corridor house, to a winged corridor building, culminating in a courtyard villa. Corn dryers in one of the ancillary buildings suggests that part of the wealth of the villa may have come from the production of agricultural surplus. Evidence for metalworking was found, including iron smelting and smithing. Following its abandonment in the late fourth or early fifth century AD the villa was subject to extensive robbing. A rich artefact assemblage was recovered along with animal bone and environmental material that may help reconstruct aspects of the economy and landscape of the villa. Four inhumations and a single cremation burial were also found.
