Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at 8 Cliff Approach, Roedean, East Sussex in advance of residential redevelopment. Two trenches, each measuring 10m by 1.5m were excavated and attained a maximum depth of 1m below the ground surface. No significant archaeological features or deposits were recovered, and it was noted that landscaping and footing trenches associated with the former residential dwellings on site had substantially truncated the underlying chalk substrata. Furthermore, given the lack of residual finds recovered from both the top soil and colluvial deposits it has been suggested that in all likelihood there has not been a sustained episode of pre-modern cultural activity on site. No further archaeological mitigation has been recommended. |
