Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on land at Float Farm, Udimore as a result of a planning application for a new farm building on the site. A desk-based assessment had established that there may be activity at the site from the Mesolithic period through to the Post Medieval period. There are numerous Roman iron-working sites in the vicinity, and during the Medieval period a barrier (the Damme) was constructed across the river valley and there was a quay at Float Farm (the name 'Float' derives from a dock). However, the watching brief produced a single undated archaeological feature, which may have been a kiln or oven, and a range of unstratified later Post Medieval artefacts |
